The symptoms of diabetes

 Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes

There are some signs and symptoms that are common in diabetes. For example there is not enough glucose in the cells of the body, but too much glucose in the blood. The diabetes will arise when the body’s cells are resistant to the insulin being produced by the pancreas. Elevated glucose levels are the result of insufficient insulin due to the destroyed insulin producing cells

The body’s reaction can be identified with the following signs and symptoms common to both types of diabetes:

Frequent urination especially at night. When there is too much glucose in the blood, the kidneys take water from the blood to weaken the glucose. As a result, the bladder is always full and you are constantly running to the bathroom.

Excessive thirst occurs in a person with diabetes because the body is drawing extra water from the blood, frequent urination occurs, you will dehydrate and feel the need to drink more to replace the water you are losing.

Weight loss without trying might sound great, but it could be a sign of diabetes. The body is looking for an energy source because the cells aren’t getting the glucose they need. The body renews its energy source by breaking down fat and muscle tissue and the result is weight loss. Weight loss can also occur with  diabetes, but it usually happens gradually as the cells increasingly become resistant to insulin.

Experiencing fatigue on a regular basis is a sign of the body’s cells not getting the energy they need. The body feels weak and run down.

Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet can happen over a period of time as consistently elevated glucose in the blood damages the nervous system, specifically in thefeet, legs and hands.

Extreme hunger especially after just eating and infrequent bouts of blurred vision and dry mouth.

Other symptoms are nausea and occasional vomiting, abdominal pain, heavy or labored breathing and frequent infections relating to the skin, vagina or urinary tract.

Additional symptoms are decreased vision, itching around the groin area or vagina, frequent yeast infections, sores or cuts that heal slowly, dark skin changes in the groin, neck and armpit, and impotency.

In order to determine if a person has diabetes, a fasting blood glucose test or an oral glucose tolerance test can be performed. The Fasting Blood Glucose test requires no food or liquids except water or black coffee for an eight- hour period. A normal blood sugar level for this test is from 70 to 99mg/dl. A range of 100 through 125 mg/dl signals a person is pre-diabetic and having a blood glucose level of 126mg/dl or higher determines diabetes.
